rustling pillows, irate flamingos, drums thumped feverishly in basements. tweaked cassettes, noisy buses, restless hands tapping dashboard rhythms in thick dusk traffic. found sound, musique concre&#768,,te, stuttering drum loops forged in twilight boredom — hyperedited into ruminative dance collages. pillow by mischa lively (ne&#769,,e barton, blake): 4 songs, 25 minutes, a hybrid of exertion and uplift. pillow marks both the nashville native’s debut for racecar and the denouement of an evolution. once rigidly stuck to notions of how rhythm should be utilized — barton is a trained percussionist — the producer eventually realized the potential in limiting himself to a minimalist diet of new and archived drum loops from which to build songs. studying myriad treatment techniques, barton then executed a vision unmoored to binary ideas about “live” versus “electronic,” blurring lines as he composed with an ear for idm, dub, techno, and ambient music. hence pillow: a vast assemblage of rhythm and sound performed to mirror the spirit of dance records. indeed, the 12” is as ripe for warehouse parties as meditative nights alone, headphones affixed, candles lit, marveling at the mysteries humans conjure with physical limbs. “rhythm is instinctual to me,” barton remarks when asked about his preference for recording analogue patterns versus beats sourced from 1s and 0s. “and i dislike sitting nearly as much as working from computers.” movement, then, is a virtue to barton, and in mischa lively he’s found a taut, elegant, propulsive vehicle in which to explore it.

for the second bad barbie records vinyl release of 2016 we are more than exited to bring you the magnificent work from the bla bla music owner daniel sanchez with his impromptu ep. here we have four amazing pieces where each one tells a different history. the first one pearled into droplets saw the light after a great live jam and the result is combination of several layers of base elements with subtle minimalistic articulations. these, in combination of the bass and synths lines do create a truly amazing micro house piece. the second one vague, is an atmospheric dub were a single synth chord raises in slowly, followed by a very subtle kick and bass line to set a bit of rhythm to the whole thing, creating a superb dreamy vibe while the chords do their thing with delicate reverbs and delays in the backend. a great musical piece indeed. for the third track we have yi, again another amazing micro house jewel born from a live jam, but this one is even more energetic than the first one and it also includes, besides a rocking bass line, analog synth chords that lifts up the mood during specific moments, which also do their part articulating themselves perfectly with some occasional twisted vocals that helps create an amazing party vibe from beginning to end. and if this wasn t enough we also have bedroom stories vocal tool that daniel included with his delivery, which can help spice up a dj set with ease.

ts10 is the 1st ep of the toneseries project. born from the collaboration between french music producer, live performer and dj - david k, and lumièreslanuit s co-founder and an der grenze s founder - edouard morin. however, it isn t clear which artist from their extended crew stands behind this 1st release, as if the berlin-based music label wanted to focus on the music rather on the artist. ts10 consists of two tracks, both deep and groovy. whereas ailleurs disseminates the perfect warm-up groove, desert snowflakes fires off a more dancefloor-driven vibe. with regard to the artwork, as shown on the cover, each track has its own colour. there is neither a a nor a b-side. the same applies to the record vinyl itself. each track stands on it own. as a result, ailleurs and desert snowflakes distinguish themselves from each other through their vibes and colours, although they remain in the same spirit. in summary, toneseries brings together the idea of interdependence between music and design: what colour follows on from music and, in return, which musicality comes out of colours.

london modular alliance is the raw and unpredictable music project from the uk’s best known, dedicated modular synth shop london modular. its members simon lynch, phil ventre and gavin pykerman met through a shared passion in modular synthesisers. impromptu gatherings and jams soon turned into live performances at clubs, festivals and museums. from the hushed environs of the tate modern and v&a to vast sweatboxs such as fabric, bloc, freerotation, weather and berghain, london modular clearly have a flair for all things modular. this year sees a return to bloc weekender as well as new adventures at festivals such as dekmantel. they create an intense live show with a huge setup of self-assembled modular gear. every set starts with one small looping beginning – a patch – and is expanded into a deep sonic landscape. with the use of cables they build unexpected circuits and explore the power of pure electronic sounds without the use of a digital software infrastructure. no laptops, no button pushing, everything is created on the spot using modular synthesizers and is based on live improvisations. overall lma tries to keep its live sets in the dark: unrecorded, off the internet and only for those who are present in the moment. a clear break with the capture-all mentality of the internet age.

this track has been in my computer since a little while when dj sotofett joined me here in amsterdam, to play an epic back to back at the school (amazing new club here). when i am doing a track, it could go to a lot of different directions as im jamming them for hours in my pipe studio. i sometimes could get lost. so i asked sotofett to join me in the studio to help to finish it. then we ended with those 2 versions of cham, which are, as often when i work with the sextags man, the result of live takes almost unedited. we also add some percussions from shadi khries and we recorded two versions of the same track within hours. one being bass driven with a lot of psychedelic noises and the other one more space-techno. our adventures continues, here is another slice of spaced out music.hope you ll enjoy.

the label’s first reference, hooded001, is a two tracks ep called “los dinosaurios” by personal mythologies. the two cuts have been recorded from live improvs by the artist. the a side, homonym to the title of the ep is a slow, rugged and abrasive techno jam that passes the 11 minutes mark. the second extract, “cuando los dinosaurios dominan la tierra” is an ambient odissey of fourteen minutes that features a static melody around which different melodic and rhythmic elements are developed.

pete herbert drops the second release on paradise row - the imprint he and dicky trisco set up to release their own output. mango moon is a very herbertesque number pumped full of musical influences from house to italo to disco, but with an eagle eye at all times on driving the dance floor really wild. pedro demonstrates his years of experience as both a producer and a dj in a track that captures so much of the territory he has covered in both guises over the years. with its pumping live disco underbelly, its melodic italo-style keys riding on top and its rock solid drums, it really is a very classy production by a dj/ producer who knows where he wants to go and how to get us all there at the same time. meanwhile on the flip, his label and dj compadre dicky trisco flips the track in a live disco direction with an epic take of his own that throws more than a few surprises into the mix. dicky teases the dancefloor with a long build up but just wait until those wicked keys by faze action s robin lee drop in! quality stuff, & more great dance floor tackle courtesy of paradise row.

andreas tilliander returns to kontra-musik in a grand style with his second tm404 album. titled acidub , this highly anticipated release is much more of an evolution than a repetition of the first superbly self-restricted album, where tilliander even decided to use only one of the two roland tb-303 waveforms. acidub is a more playful and open listening experience, no doubt inspired by his extensive live touring with the tm404 concept. in fact, you can almost hear tilliander s flock of acid machines breaking free from the restrained modus operandi. every sound is like a migratory bird with a heart yearning for high altitude and favourable winds.

the double live album dark magus was recorded on march 30, 1974, at carnegie hall in new york city. dark magus was released after davis’ 1975 retirement. after releasing the live recordings agharta (1975) and pangaea (1976), dark magus was originally only released in japan.

in seiner glanzvollen karriere remixte er bereits lcd soundsystem, depeche mode, coldcut, the xx, moby und viele andere. mit seinem label turbo verhalf er neuen künstlern wie duke dumont, chromeo, gesaffelstein oder boyz noize zum durchbruch. außerdem arbeitete er regelmäßig mit koryphäen wie james murphy und pusha t zusammen. auf no fantasy required erhält er nun verstärkung von hudson mohawke und jake shears von den scissor sisters. mit no fantasy required hat tiga in zusammenarbeit mit erfolgsproduzent matthew dear und dem finnischen genie jori hulkkonen (der auch live mit ihm performt) eine platte geschaffen, auf der er sich ehrlicher, offener und verspielter fühlt, wie er sagt. es hat immer eine sehr fruchtbare kreative spannung im herzen von tigas musik gegeben: auf der einen seite ist er der underground techno don, auf der anderen seite wohnt ihm eine pop-sensibilität inne, die es ihm ermöglicht herausragende songs zu schreiben. es ist diese dualität, die ihn zu einem der fesselndsten charaktere der elektronischen musik macht.
